Lange Anna (Tall Anna) - Helgoland's landmark

The Lange Anna (Tall Anna) is Germany's only free-standing rock tower. And since 1865 the landmark of Helgoland.

Natural monument endangered
Every day the stone colossus loses stability. Responsible for that are the Katersandlagen (embedded barely solidified sand layers), but mainly through undercutting at the foot of the natural monument. North Sea water penetrates into the accruing ruptures. If frost is added small and large stone pieces are being blasted away. It could happen that the 'old lady' might not survive the next winter.

Anna in numbers
Modern construction technique is the only rescue. Anna has been exactly measured in any case. The result in short: 47 metres height, 329 square-metres surface, around 21 metres circumference at the foot and 14 metres at the head. The total volume is 11.700 cubic-metres with a total weight of 26.910 tons. And the layer inclination of the rock tower is 12-14 degree in southwest-northwest direction.
